The essence of volunteerism at the Afghan Women’s Centre of Montreal is perhaps best embodied by its founder, Makai Harif, who has worked tirelessly since establishing the organisation  twenty years ago to fulfill her vision of lifting up and supporting immigrant women from all over the world.  Ms. Harif's devotion to the organisation begins with an understanding of the trials and hardships faced by immigrant women, and her hard work has been instrumental in making the AWCM what it is today: a place which encourages and supports immigrant women to engage with and positively impact their communities.

Ms. Harif is not only the founder, but also a life-long volunteer at AWCM.  Her loyalty, selflessness, and dedication are all model qualities for those who wish to serve as volunteers with the organisation.

At AWCM, volunteers come from diverse ethnic and professional backgrounds and can help to open doors within the community for immigrant women in a variety of ways.  At the core of one’s motivation to volunteer should always be a desire to help others, to engage meaningfully and productively with one’s community, and to give without the expectation of receiving something in return.  Everyone has experienced and benefitted from the kindness of others, and volunteering is a way to pay that kindness forward.  It is an expression of gratitude for the grace we have been shown by others and a way to ensure that we perpetuate the spirit of volunteerism by instilling it in others.
