  • 1st Book Project Session and Collective Kitchen

It is a big day for the Afghan Women’s Centre! Today we are holding a Collective Kitchen session as well as the first session for our book project! Members gathered in the kitchen to reconnect, cook a delicious feast of two-onion chicken and Afghan tea and cookies, and welcome our two esteemed guests, Penny Rankin and Linda Serpone of the Montreal Council of Women. As we sat to eat, conversations about culture, feminism, education, and our upcoming book erupted. The book aims at bringing together senior Canadian citizens and senior immigrant women by having them share their stories. We hope this project will help break down the barriers of language, ageism, stereotypes, and discrimination in the journeys of immigrants and Canadians seniors. We are so thankful to the participants of our book project and of this delicious meal.

  • Summer Picnic Event

This last weekend, the Afghan Women’s Centre was delighted to come together once again with diverse communities, members, family, friends, volunteers, and partners for a picnic at the beautiful Parc de Dieppe in the context of celebrating Afghan cultural heritage and breaking social isolation. We want to thank everyone who was able to attend, especially those travelling from other cities: your attendance is a testament to the importance of cultural and social connection, and how crucial it is for newly arrived and racialized women to have a shared space. A speech by our Centre’s Founder and President, Makai Aref, allowed us to reflect on this matter as well as the situation in Afghanistan. We are extremely pleased that we were all able to have this opportunity to connect and to strengthen ties here in Canada, while also reflecting on and celebrating our heritage.

  • AGM 2022 was a success

The AWCM was glad to finally hold in person, after 2 years of harshness and isolation during the pandemic, the most important meeting of the year: its Annual General Meeting 2022. The event was a success, with a high turnout of our members and community partners. We shared our annual and financial reports to inform our community about what we have been up to during the year, as well as our achievements and the challenges we faced over the course of last year. Upholding our mission of adapting and expanding our services to our community, we discussed our members’ necessities and how the AWCM can help them improve their lives and those of their loved ones. We were happy to see that non-members and community partners were present during the event and they were willing to become members as well. We greatly appreciate their participation and our upcoming collaborations together. Thank you, everyone!
